Active hair

Remember that New Years resolution to work out more?  Well, I hope that you are sticking to it, seems how it is still only January!  If you need an idea for your hair while you are working out, just check out these amazing men and women at the 2012 Australian Open.  The key seems to be headbands and visors :)

A wide headband will keep the fly away hair and the sweat out of your eyes.  Doesn't this make you want to go to Australia and play some tennis?!  Or, for a little less expensive option, tennis indoors somewhere near your home?  I hope you are having a happy January!

The best of the Golden Globes

If you didn't watch the Golden Globes on Sunday, don't fret, I didn't either!  Instead, I have all the best hair right here.  Some of these celebrities have hair that seems impossible to ever recreate, but there were some great doable looks as well.

Here are three very different looks, all with similar lengths of short hair.
Evan Rachel Woods' style is so elegant.  This is one of my favorites!

Michelle Williams' style could be worn with any type of headband to dress it up or down.

To get Viola Davis' style, a mini flat iron is a must!

All of these next looks are styles you can do at home.  Tina Fey's hairstyle would look great for work as well as going out.  To get this look, curl your hair with a large iron or with hot rollers and then brush through your hair completely with a brush.

These beachy waves are very similar and look great on both women.  It is easiest to get this style by using a 1" - 1 1/2" curling iron.  Curl your whole head and then use just your fingers to comb through.  Alternate the direction you curl each section to make the curls look more natural.  (Future post alert for more details!)

This is some seriously sleek and shiny hair, she looks fabulous!  We all know that this was achieved with a flat iron, no one has hair that naturally does this.

Salma Hayek looks like she has twice the amount of hair than the average person (most likely some extensions in there).  She also has the color trend of dark roots that gradually move to light ends, called ombre, that everyone is talking about.

These next updos are very hard to achieve on your own, but fun to have a stylist do for you next time you have a big event.
Angelina Jolie's classic and beautiful bun.

Another two similar looks.  I love how the headband changes it just a little bit.

Lea Michele uses some natural texture in this updo.  This would be great for a wedding!

There are not as many options for the men's styles, but they didn't look too shabby either!

Most magazines will show you the best and the worst looks.  To stay on the positive side, I'm just going to stick with the ones I like :)  Which one is your favorite?

Check out The Beach House!

The Beach House Salon had the honor of being featured on the very cool website bangstyle.com this week.  Check it out!  Brooke, one of the co-owners, was interviewed.  I am so proud to be a part of this new salon in Tacoma, we have a great group of ladies working there.  Come in and see us when you can!

Do you have too much hair?

Thinking about cutting off all of your hair?  Why not donate it?  I recently cut 12 inches off a clients hair so she could donate it to an organization that makes wigs for cancer patients.  This gorgeous head of hair belongs to the wonderful Alli.  Alli had been growing her hair out for quite awhile so that she could do this.  Thank you Alli!

Unfortunately, I am familiar with the other side of this experience as well.  I had a client in San Diego that had to go through chemotherapy twice while I was doing her hair.  I am happy to say that she is doing very well now!  However, the process of growing hair back out after treatment can take a long time and often, the new hair is very different than before. It is a very hard thing for a woman to lose her hair and the wigs can help them feel like themselves both during and after.

The first step is to section off the hair that you will cut.  Because Alli's hair was so thick, we made multiple ponytails.  After the hair is cut we put it in a ziplock bag to send.  Most organizations require at least 10-12 inches of natural (not bleached) hair.  All over color is generally okay.  Guys, you can do this too!  My brother grew his hair out in high school and donated it.  Your hair doesn't have to be this long if you are willing to go really short when you cut it.

After losing all the length, she looks like a whole new person!  We cut Alli's hair into a bob that hit just above the shoulders and was slightly angled towards the front.

I've done this quite a few times for people and yes, sometimes there are a few tears.  Not with Alli though, she had been waiting to do this for a long time!  This is such a wonderful thing to do and hair is needed all the time.  If you are interested in donating:

Sadly, most of us have a connection in some way to someone who has battled or is battling cancer.  This is one small thing you can do to help that has a huge impact.  Don't have the patience or perhaps the hair to grow out?  Another passion of mine is running so, do a run that uses your entry fee or fundraising for cancer research!  Here are a few ideas :)  Maybe I will see you out there!

New year, new...shampoo!

Are you in a shampoo rut?  Want to do something new in 2012?  I think it is time to shake things up!  Your shampoo and conditioner are easy things to change.  I work with some of what I consider the best products in the industry, and here are my favorites:

For an EXCELLENT daily shampoo and conditioner, try AVEDA Shampure.  It is light enough for those of you who just have to wash your hair everyday, as well as those who wear your hair with a lot of volume.

Need some extra moisture?  KEVIN MURPHY Hydrate-Me is for you.  Leaves the hair feeling smooth and silky.

AVEDA Damage Remedy, best for hair damaged by hair color or too much heat.  This one does not suds very much, but that does not mean it is not working.  Just add a little more water instead of more shampoo.

Do you wear your hair straight everyday?  Try AVEDA Smooth Infusion.  It has a wonderful citrus smell.

You may have heard of dry shampoo before.  This is great for someone who has an oily scalp and would like to make their style last a little longer.  Also, it is great if you have a ton of hair and hate washing it because it takes so long to dry.  Try KEVIN MURPHY Fresh Air.  It comes in an easy to use aerosol can.  Be sure to shake really well before each spray!

Have curly or coarse hair?  Try AVEDA Brilliant or MOROCCAN OIL Moisture Repair Shampoo and Conditioner.  Both with give you moisture and control.

Is the man in your life stealing your precious shampoo?  Tell him to get his own!  (Or I guess get him some the next time you are at the salon.)  AVEDA Pure-formance shampoo and conditioner have a great manly scent.

Still need some more awesome reasons to shop KEVIN MURPHY, MOROCCAN OIL or AVEDA?

*All KEVIN MURPHY products are paraben and sulfate free.
*KEVIN MURPHY products contain essential oils to moisturize and strengthen your hair.
*All KEVIN MURPHY packaging is 100% recyclable.
*MOROCCAN OIL, AVEDA and KEVIN MURPHY do not test on animals.
*MOROCCAN OIL shampoo and conditioner are paraben, sulfate and phosphate free.
*MOROCCAN OIL uses recycled packaging.
*Ingredients in AVEDA products are all at least 89% organic.
*Much of the AVEDA packaging is made from recycled materials and can be recycled when    you are finished with it.
*AVEDA uses 100% wind power at their manufacturing headquarters as well as at the Institute in Minneapolis. (My alma mater!)

I know it is tempting to buy hair stuff at the drug store, but always be sure to purchase these products in a salon.  It is a great way to support your local salon and it is the only way you can guarantee the quality of the product!
