New Years!

When you are out for New Years Eve, it is always fun to have your hair done a little different than your everyday style.  Here is my favorite style that I have done for the big night.  I was told afterward that she scored a new job that night because someone noticed her hair and came over to talk to her!  You never know...!

When you go in for a style appointment, bring pictures and be sure to be very clear about what you want the end result to be.  Your stylist will be able to tell you what is possible for your hair type and can always give you more ideas.  Don't be afraid to try something NEW!

Happy New Year!

The big tease

Words of the day:

TEASE and BACK-COMB

Last week one of the styles I suggested involved some "teasing" or "back-combing."  I should have probably posted this before last weeks entry, but here is a video I found that does a great job of showing you how to tease your own hair.

As you can see, the key to teasing is to make it nice and big and then you can comb it to the height you want.  If you don't make it big enough to start, when you go to smooth it, you will lose everything you tried to put in.  Also, if you have trouble getting bobby pins (or as my dear friend Sarah likes to call them, robert pins) to stay in your hair, try just a little bit of back-combing to give the bobby pins something to grab on to.

Almost every up-do you see starts with some teasing.  Remember this picture from last week?  There is just a little bit of a bump in the crown to give this ponytail something extra.

Try some back-combing this weekend to give yourself some
major volume at all those holiday parties!

Not your average ponytail

There is more than one way to wear a ponytail.  Try these 3 ideas to spice up your everyday look!

To get the look below, tease the hair at the crown (top of your head) a little and pull loosely into a low ponytail.  This looks best when the hair is not perfectly straight.  Pull out a few strands around the face and curl them with a flat iron.

Try braiding a few sections before you pull them back.  You can do one or two braids.  To keep it looking effortless, just put the braids on one side of the head.

Instead of the usual straight back ponytail, pull your hair off to one side.  Give yourself a deep side part and sweep everything to the heavy side.  This can be done with curly or straight hair.

Try not to do this.

And of course, every ponytail looks best with a great cut and color!

Tired of your solid hair color?

Looking to brighten up your solid hair color?  Try adding some highlights that are just a few shades lighter than your base color, like the ones shown here.

Because the highlights are not too light, the grow-out is soft and you will only need to touch them up about every third appointment. They will add some dimension to your hair without looking streaky.

This color technique works with all colors and on short, long and men's haircuts.  Stylists are extra busy this time of year, so book your holiday appointment now so you can look fabulous for all those family photos!

What in the world does my stylist mean?

Have you ever been to the salon and your stylist uses a term or phrase that leaves you thinking "What in the world does he/she mean?"  I am here to help.

Today's word:

PRODUCT

To help explain what someone means when they say "product" I need to tell you a little story.  One day I was cutting my friend Teresa's hair.  At the time, I had probably been doing Teresa's hair for the past 3 or 4 years.  We had added bangs and she asked me what she could do to help style them.  I said, "all they need is a little product," and quickly moved on to styling them.  Teresa sat in silence for about a minute and then confessed, "Carina, there is something I have wanted to tell you for a few years.  I have no idea what you mean when you say product."

Product can mean anything you put in your hair: gel, mousse, pommade, hairspray, heat protectant, even shampoo.  So, anytime a stylist tells you that you need product, ask them to clarify which one!  I am lucky enough to use both Aveda and Kevin Murphy products in the salons that I work in.

Try KEVIN MURPHY'S Moisture shampoo and conditioner along with their
Straight Defense for a sleek, shiny look.

Use AVEDA'S Daily Hair Repair as a leave-in conditioner for hair that is dry and damaged.  Smooth Infusion Style-prep Smoother helps fight humidity.
AirControl hairspray is my all-time favorite Aveda product.  Use it as a finishing touch to keep everything in place.  You can layer it on as well and it will give you a very strong hold.

Have fun!
