Oscar fever!

Once again, there was an awards show that I did not watch, but loved the hair!  Here are a few of my favorites!

I have been seeing lots of braids lately.  This updo shows that braids can be elegant.

This is such a simple style but looks beautiful with her long red hair.

I really like the loose waves in the front but am not so sure about the back...

A very beautiful twist on the classic chignon.

These 20's style fingerwaves have been very popular and are great way to make long hair look short for an evening.

I had to put this one up because it is just a great blow-out and fabulous color!  The warmer, lighter brown looks nice with her skin tone.

It is perfect that these awards shows are in the spring because they can give you tons of ideas for wedding season, which is just around the corner!

What is the best way to start your day?

By getting a cup of coffee of course!

The best cup of coffee I have ever had actually had nothing to do with the coffee, it was what was written on the cup.

Tell someone their hair looks good today, like really really good!

2 Ways to wear your hair for work

A funny thing happens when you google professional hairstyles.  They suggest this:

And this:

Now, as a professional, I would not suggest either one of those looks for work, or other times of day for that matter.

The key to professional hair when it is short, is a a strong haircut.  If you have a good cut for your hair, the styling should be relatively easy.  Always make sure that you talk through the style that you want to make sure that it suits your hair type.  Example: if you have curly hair, don't bring in a picture of someone with really straight hair unless you are prepared to invest in a good flatiron and some extra time in the morning to do it.

Try this style on short or long hair.  Dry your hair and style it as usual.  Then, take a small section on either side and twist it back.  Take one bobby pin and pin the twist down.  Take a second bobby pin and cross it over the first to make an X, this will secure the hair.  Pull a little bit of hair that is not twisted over the bobby pins to hide them.

This next picture shows an option for long hair.  To get the look, all you will need is about 5-10 bobby pins.  Start with dry hair, it can be curly or straight.  Twist your hair into 2 sections and tie them into a knot.  Use the bobby pins to secure the knot.  It will stay the best if you use two pins and cross them in an X.  Leave out some of the ends and tuck in some of the others.

I tried this the other night and only used 1 bobby pin!  It is super easy to do!

To get a less messy look I could just tuck in some of the ends.

How-to Beach Waves!

As promised, here is a guide on how to get beach waves!

Probably one of the most commonly asked for styles, it is easy to achieve once you get the hang of curling your hair with a flat iron.

You will need a flat iron, a comb, a clip,
a brush and some hairspray.
The key to this look is to keep the roots pretty straight and the curls more towards the ends.  Using a flat iron instead of a curling iron will help it to not look like you have ringlets.  Start with completely dry hair.  Use your clip to section off the top of your hair.

Next, take small sections of your hair and curl it.  When you use your flat iron, always keep it moving so that you don't cause any creases.  The bigger the section you take, the looser the curl will be.

This video is a quick look at how to hold the flat iron.  The curl that she does will curl back away from her face.  If you wrap the hair the other way around the iron it will curl towards the face.

The picture on the left shows the way to wrap the hair to make the curl go away from the face. On the right, it will curl towards the face.

Continue curling your entire head, alternating the direction of each curl.  When you have curled your whole head, spray everything with hairspray.  Then, let the curls cool completely.  When your hair is cool, take your brush and brush completely through your hair.  Don't be afraid!  As long as your hair is not still warm, you will not lose the curl.  If you do want it to stay extra curly though, don't comb it out.

Have fun and let me know if you have any questions!

Who is cutting your hair?

Good news in the world of Cosmetology!  Recently, in the state of Indiana, House Bill 1006 was DEFEATED!

1006 was a bill that would have made licenses for cosmetologists unnecessary.  That would mean that anyone could have a salon and anyone could do hair without having spent a minute in school.  That would also mean some pretty scary hair moments for clients.  The bill would have not only affected cosmetologists and their schools, but other licensed professionals such as dieticians, hearing aid dealers, private investigators and security guards as well.  It is so important as a licensed cosmetologist to have the skills and the knowledge of my profession to keep clients safe and do the job well.  I learn something new in my line of work pretty much everyday, but my foundation comes from what I learned in school. That knowledge is what I needed to get my license and what I need in the salon everyday.

Thank you to the thousands of people in these industries who signed petitions to help stop this bill from passing!  Here's to getting your hair done by someone who knows what they are doing!
